Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville was ranked the top nursing home in Maryland by Newsweek and included on the magazine’s list of “America’s Best Nursing Homes” for 2025, a distinction shared by less than 15% of the country’s nursing homes, according to a Nov. 21 press release.

Newsweek partnered with global data research firm Statista for the fourth year to rank America’s best nursing homes. This most recent list recognizes 1,050 nursing homes across the 25 states with the highest number of facilities, according to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The top nursing homes were assessed based on four factors: performance data, recommendations of medical professionals, accreditations and resident satisfaction, according to Newsweek’s website.

HHGW also received the “high performing” rating for both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care for nursing homes from U.S. News & World Report. The report surveyed 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, making HHGW part of the 5% that earned this high rating in both categories of care, according to the press release.

The report described HHGW as a “very large facility” with 558 beds and a nonprofit, corporate ownership.

HHGW provides short-term rehabilitation, long-term care and around-the-clock skilled medical care for older adults on the campus of Charles E. Smith Life Communities, a Rockville retirement community. HHGW is the largest nursing home in the mid-Atlantic region, according to its website, and provides a range of services from medical and rehabilitative services to social and religious opportunities to amenities including kosher homestyle meals, a library, beauty salon, dental clinics, podiatry care, banking services and a personal laundry service.

HHGW houses on-site, full-time physicians; 24-hour care; and expert rehabilitation services and is a BCAT Cognitive Center of Excellence. The staff also offer religious services and spiritual care for both Jewish and non-Jewish residents in HHGW’s mission to provide quality care with Jewish values in mind. For the 11th quarter in a row, HHGW earned a five-star overall quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

“When a new associate begins their career with us, they quickly learn that dedication to empowering older adults, and the ability to make that happen, are foundational to our work,” CESLC President and CEO Bruce J. Lederman said in the press release. “Our commitment to service excellence extends back more than a century, and while we maintain high standards regardless of appraisals by others, it’s always rewarding to receive such recognition.”
