Hospital debuts Baxter Intelligence to enhance patient care

A new initiative at Baxter Health represents a leap forward in the use of robotics and artificial intelligence for increased precision, faster recovery times and improved outcomes for those they serve. Baxter Intelligence marks the next chapter for a hospital that has always been dedicated to providing the best patient care to Mountain home and the surrounding area.

A preview and demonstration event will be open to the public Friday from 7 until 4 in the main lobby of Baxter Health and will feature live demonstrations of the newest robots hosted by administrators and care professionals. A preceding event Thursday evening was held for students, Baxter Health Foundation donors and hospital staff. KTLO News stopped in and was able to get a first hand look at all the advancements being made.


Tommy Hagan test drives the Da Vinci 5 with Dr. Foster

One of the highlights of the evening was the newest Da Vinci 5 surgical robot on display for visitors to try for themselves. Advancements make it so that surgeons can feel haptic feedback and sense the difference between tension and weight in the controls. Dr. Jennifer Foster says these new features aid her in ensuring precise control during procedures.

Advanced knee replacements with Cori Surgical System

Dr. Thomas Knox, who has been at the forefront in joint and knee replacements in the Twin Lakes area, was proudly working with his team displaying the Cori Surgical System which he says is improving results and recovery time for patients.

Mazer X Robot aids in spinal procedures

Neurosurgeons are benefiting from the Mazer X robotic system which provides new levels of stability during spinal procedures reducing complication risks. Dr. Adam Smitherman, who came down for the evening demonstrations after a full day of surgery, said the investment in cutting edge tools proves Baxter Health’s commitment to their patients.

Other innovations on display included the Ion robotic bronchoscopy, which allows physicians to reach and biopsy small, hard-to-reach lung nodules, allowing for earlier diagnosis of lung cancers. Artificial intelligence is also making its way into the hospital, aiding specialists in analysis, as well as record-keeping and transcriptions, saving time and streamlining processes. CEO Ron Peterson says all this focus on the future is to aid patient care today and keep Baxter Health leading in local and regional care.
